• E-Commerce - Can it work for us?

The supply of good archive between library and researcher will always rely on creativity and personal service to find the best footage. But we ask, do users of footage want the film archives to provide an e-commerce option ? And If so, what are the formats available to libraries to supply clips via an e-commerce platform? And how do libraries make the e-commerce business model work? Our panel will use case studies using different approaches to the whole question of e-commerce and examine all these issues. We will have an open floor discussion to exchange views.

• What do Media Archives and the GLAM Sector have in common?

Deep into the digital age the traditional differences between Museums, Libraries, Galleries and Media Archives have long since dissolved so how do the cultural and creative industries work better together to ensure the preservation and savvy commercial reuse of all media assets? Bringing together museums, galleries and archive professionals in a cross-disciplinary discussion of how we can learn from each other.

I am a media historian with a particular interest in the late 19th and early 20th century. Interests include: early film history, newsreels, World War One propaganda and audience studies. Most of all, I am interested in how the different media come together, historically and today, and what this means for research and archives.

• How do we work best with our digital hosts?

From Youtube to Vimeo, there’s no denying that hosting sites are a brilliant tool for libraries to present their collections, represent history and reach a world new audiences. They’re also a breeding ground for content-creators. This workshop will bring together rights-holders, policy experts and more to discuss the key strategies and solutions to having an effective channel with case studies of when things go right and when things go wrong.

Moderated by Angela Saward, Research Development Specialist (Moving Image and Sound), Wellcome Collection.

Speakers so far include:

Jenny Hammerton - Account Manager, AP ArchiveJenny Hammerton graduated with an MA in Film Archiving in 1994 and has been working with non-fiction collections ever since. Her first job as a film archivist involved spending five years cataloguing a collection of fragile nitrate negative newsreels. These days she almost never touches a piece of film and instead sits in front of a computer screen all day grappling with YouTube. Perhaps surprisingly, this is just as much fun. The thread running through all of her work has been the impulse to make moving image archive content more accessible to all. Many film collections were difficult to access in the past, but in the digital age, it’s so much easier to share.

Mat Flasque - Director, FootageFarmMat Flasque is a director and co-owner of Footage Farm, an awards winning archive library specialising in the public domain. He has also co-produced several documentaries, most recently Interview with a Dead Man on the Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko.

She is a member of the technical copyright panel at the British Copyright Council, and an active public speaker on matters relating to copyright in the UK and EU.

Gordon Craig - VP Archive, FremantleGordon Craig is VP Archive for Fremantle International.
