Founded in 1975, BAPLA is the UK trade association for picture libraries and agencies, incorporating a broad and diverse membership, including: sole traders; major stock, production and news agencies; SMEs; cultural heritage industries and technology companies. A substantial percentage of images seen every day in print and digital media is supplied by BAPLA members. The BAPLA directory provides links members websites and other contact details, and the website covers industry-related news.

BAPLA also runs an annual industry conference. Since its inaugural event in 2014, the BAPLA FOCUS conference has established itself as the must-attend event in the image-licensing sector. The full-day event takes place every autumn. The programme is a mixture of expert panel discussions and presentations by inspirational speakers. Recurring themes covered are the future of licensing, technology trends such as AI, rights clearance and changes in copyright law.
