Member since 2022

// Esther Johnson Biography // I am an artist and filmmaker, working at the intersection of artists’ moving image and documentary. I am former recipient of the Philip Leverhulme Research Prize for Performing and Visual Arts, hold an MA from the Royal College of Art, London, and am a Fellow of The Higher Education Academy. I create poetic portraits that focus on alternative social histories and marginal worlds, to reveal resonant stories that may otherwise remain hidden or ignored. Some works reposition archival material as a way of addressing relationships between history, memory and storytelling. Work is made for exhibition, cinema screening and broadcast through individual projects, commissions and residencies. Films have been exhibited internationally in 40+ countries in galleries and arts venues, cinemas, film festivals, symposia, and on television and radio. Recent include Feature Films: DUST & METAL; ASUNDER and shorts/installations: SHIPS in the SKY; Liberation Radio; a ROLE to PLAY; and Alone Together: the Social Life of Benches. Films are held in the collections of Science Museum Group, Yorkshire Film Archive, and British Artists’ Film and Video Study Collection Central Saint Martins; and is distributed by ARGOS centre for audiovisual arts in Brussels, and vtape in Toronto. I have curated independent film programmes, written for arts publications, and am Professor of Film & Media Arts in the Art, Design & Media Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University. https://linktr.ee/BlanchePictures Instagram @Blanche_Pictures · Twitter @BlanchePictures
