Tennis: Daniel Nalbandian became the first man to beat Roger Federer in a tournament final since July 2003 after winning the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai. In an epic encounter that lasted 4 hours 33 minutes, Nalbandian came from two sets down to eventually win 6-7, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1, 7-6.

In the women’s equivalent, the WTA Championships held in Los Angeles, Amelie Mauresmo beat compatriot Mary Pierce 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 in a title win that Mauresmo described as the biggest of her career.

Soccer: In the European World Cup play off matches, Switzerland made it through to next year’s finals in Germany, after beating Turkey 4-4 on the away goals rule. The Czech Republic also qualified, for the first time in their history, after an aggregate 2-0 victory over Norway.

Marathon: In the ING New York City marathon, Paul Tergat’s winning margin over defending champion Henry Ramaala of less than a second was the smallest in the events 36 year history. The Kenyan finished in a time of 2:09:29 while in the women’s event, Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia won in a time of 2:24:41.

Did you know…

Triathlon: Australian’s Mitch Anderson and Angela Milne won their respective male and female categories to make it a clean sweep for the home nation in the Ironman Western Australia. Anderson came home in a time of 8:27:36 with Milne finishing in 9:31:32.

Golf: The Welsh pairing of Bradley Dredge and Stephen Dodd won the Algarve World Cup in Portugal, pocketing a cool $1.4 million between them. The final round was washed out, allowing the duo to stay two shots clear of Sweden and defending champions England.

Tennis: Slovakia and Croatia make their first appearances in the Davis Cup Finals, taking place at the Sibamac Arena NTC in Bratislava. With rising talents Ivan Ljubicic, Mario Ancic and Dominik Hrbarty on show, and with Goran Ivanisevic, who won the 2001 Men’s Wimbledon title and also finished top of the Delta Tour of Champions world rankings for the 2006 season, named in the Croatian squad, it promises to be a thrilling contest.

Awards: Having been officially announced in October, this year’s Nobel Peace Prize will formally be presented to joint winners, the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (UNIAEA) and its director Mohamed ElBaradei, at a ceremony in Oslo. They are being honoured for their combined efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and promote safe nuclear energy.
